Every term, in plain words.

46 concepts found in hosting plans in Mexico, what they are and what each one gives you.

Email

Email accounts (mailboxes)

Addresses on your domain, like sales@yourbusiness.mx, each with its own password and storage space (the “mailbox size”).

Why it matters: They look more trustworthy than @gmail.com and the data stays with your company even when an employee leaves.

Webmail

An app to read and send email from the browser, with nothing to install. We include Roundcube, with filters, address book and calendar.

Why it matters: Check your email from any computer or phone at webmail.yourdomain.mx.

IMAP, POP3 and SMTP

Protocols used by Outlook, Apple Mail or your phone. IMAP syncs folders across all devices; POP3 downloads and usually deletes from the server; SMTP sends.

Why it matters: We recommend IMAP over SSL: you see the same on desktop and phone, and server backups protect your messages.

Forwarders

Rules that automatically forward mail from one address to another without creating a mailbox. For example, info@ delivered to two people.

Why it matters: Saves accounts and space, and you can change who receives each address without telling your clients.

Autoresponders

Automatic reply to whoever writes to you, for example during holidays or to confirm a request was received.

Why it matters: Nobody goes unanswered even when you are away.

Default address (catch-all)

Decides what happens to mail sent to addresses that do not exist on your domain: reject it or deliver it to a mailbox.

Why it matters: We set it to “reject” to avoid bulk spam; change it if people often misspell your addresses.

Mailing lists

An address that distributes each message to a group of subscribers, managed with Mailman.

Why it matters: Useful for internal announcements or small groups. For commercial newsletters, use an email marketing service.

Emails per hour

Maximum messages each domain can send in 60 minutes. Each recipient counts: one email to 10 people counts as 10.

Why it matters: Stops a stolen password from sending thousands of emails and getting the server blacklisted. Anything over the limit waits in the queue and goes out the next hour.

MailBaby (outgoing mail relay)

A specialised service that all outgoing mail from our servers passes through. It analyses each message, blocks spam and viruses, and delivers from IPs with a good reputation.

Why it matters: Your emails reach Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo inboxes more reliably, and if another customer’s account is compromised, your domain is not affected.

SPF, DKIM and DMARC

DNS records that prove an email really came from your server. SPF lists authorised servers, DKIM signs each message and DMARC says what to do if something does not match.

Why it matters: Gmail and Yahoo require them since 2024. Without them your emails may land in spam or be rejected, and someone could spoof your domain.

Antispam and antivirus

Filters that check incoming mail (SpamAssassin, RBL lists and ClamAV) and flag or discard suspicious messages before they reach your inbox.

Why it matters: Less time deleting junk and less risk of opening an infected attachment.

Domains and DNS

Domain

Your site’s name on the internet (yourbusiness.mx). It is leased yearly from a registry such as NIC México or Verisign.

Why it matters: It is the base of your digital brand: site, email and social profiles all point to it.

DNS and records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT)

The “directory” that translates your domain into server addresses. A points the website, MX the email, CNAME creates aliases and TXT stores verifications such as SPF.

Why it matters: With managed DNS you can host the site in one place and email in another, or verify your domain with Google and Microsoft.

Subdomains

Sections before your domain, like shop.yourbusiness.mx or blog.yourbusiness.mx, which can host their own site.

Why it matters: Separate projects without buying another domain.

Addon and alias domains

An addon domain hosts an independent site on the same account. An alias (parked) shows the same site under another name.

Why it matters: Run several brands from a single cPanel and a single bill.

Transfer and EPP code

Moving a domain to another registrar. The EPP or Auth Code is the password that authorises it; your old registrar must give it to you.

Why it matters: Transferring adds a year to the term, so you do not lose what you already paid.

WHOIS and privacy

Public database with a domain owner’s details. Privacy protection hides name, phone and personal email where the registry allows it.

Why it matters: Reduces spam and sales calls aimed at the owner.

Development and databases

PHP (multi-version)

The language behind WordPress, PrestaShop, Laravel and most websites. Multi-version lets you pick PHP 7.4 to 8.4 per site.

Why it matters: Upgrade a modern site to PHP 8.4 without breaking an older one that still needs 7.4.

Python apps

Run Django, Flask or FastAPI projects from cPanel with “Setup Python App”, with a virtual environment and your choice of Python version.

Why it matters: Publish APIs, automations or dashboards without a VPS.

Node.js apps

Run server-side JavaScript apps (Express, server-mode Next.js, bots) from cPanel with npm.

Why it matters: One hosting plan for your PHP site and your Node API.

MySQL / MariaDB databases

Where products, users, orders or blog posts are stored. Managed with phpMyAdmin, each with users holding different permissions.

Why it matters: One database per project makes backups easier and keeps one site’s errors from affecting another.

PostgreSQL

An advanced database engine, preferred by Django and systems with complex queries or geographic data.

Why it matters: Available on request for projects that need it.

SSH and Git

SSH is encrypted terminal access to the server. Git lets you deploy code from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket with “Git Version Control”.

Why it matters: Developers can use Composer, WP-CLI and automatic deployments.

Scheduled tasks (cron)

Commands the server runs on schedule, for example sending reminders every morning or clearing temp files. Minimum interval: 5 minutes.

Why it matters: Automate processes without leaving a computer on.

FTP and SFTP

Ways to upload and download files with apps like FileZilla. SFTP is encrypted and the recommended option.

Why it matters: Create FTP accounts limited to one folder for your designer.

1-click installer (Softaculous)

Install WordPress, Joomla, PrestaShop, Moodle and 400+ apps in a minute, with optional automatic updates.

Why it matters: No technical knowledge needed to get a site running.

Staging environment

A copy of your site where you test changes, plugins or updates before going live.

Why it matters: Your customers never see a site broken by an update.

Performance and resources

High-speed SSD in RAID 10

Your data lives on solid-state drives (SSD) arranged in RAID 10: data is spread across several disks to read and write faster, and every disk has a mirror holding an exact copy.

Why it matters: Speed, consistent data and redundancy: if a disk fails, the server keeps running without losing data.

SATA drives (backup server)

High-capacity hard drives, ideal for storing backups. Backup servers start at 1 TB.

Why it matters: Lots of space at a lower cost, so you can keep backup history for longer.

CloudLinux: CPU, RAM and processes

A system that gives each account its own share of CPU, memory and simultaneous processes (entry processes), isolated from others.

Why it matters: If another site on the server gets a traffic spike, yours keeps running the same.

Inodes

Total number of files and folders in the account, including emails. One email is one file.

Why it matters: If you reach the limit, empty mail trash and old caches; if your project grows, upgrade.

Bandwidth (transfer)

Data sent from your site to visitors in a month. “Unmetered” means we do not charge for traffic as long as usage is normal for a website.

Why it matters: No worries if a post goes viral.

CDN

A network of servers in many countries that caches images, CSS and JavaScript close to visitors. Cloudflare compatible.

Why it matters: Ideal if you have customers in the US or Europe as well as Mexico.

Uptime and SLA

Percentage of time the service is online. 99.9% means under 44 minutes of downtime a month. The SLA defines credits if it is not met.

Why it matters: See our commitment on the SLA page.

Security and backup

SSL certificate (AutoSSL)

Encrypts the connection between visitor and site (the padlock and https://). AutoSSL issues and renews it automatically for every domain and subdomain.

Why it matters: Without SSL browsers flag your site as “not secure” and Google ranks it lower.

Web application firewall (WAF / ModSecurity)

A filter that inspects each request and blocks known attacks like SQL injection or XSS before they reach your site.

Why it matters: Protects even plugins you have not updated yet.

Imunify360

A security suite that scans files for malware, blocks brute-force attacks and cleans infections automatically.

Why it matters: Finds and fixes issues before Google flags your site as dangerous.

Automatic backups (JetBackup)

Regular copies of files, databases and email stored on another server. From cPanel you restore a file, a database or the whole account.

Why it matters: If something is deleted or an update fails, roll back to the day before in minutes. We still recommend keeping your own copy.

Dedicated IP

An IP address used only by your account instead of shared with other sites.

Why it matters: Required for some bank integrations, API allow-lists or IP-based FTP access.

Migration

Moving your sites, databases and mailboxes from another provider to our servers.

Why it matters: Free up to 10 GB, with the DNS switch scheduled to avoid downtime.

Servers and panels

cPanel and WHM

cPanel is the panel where you manage one hosting account. WHM is the top-level panel to create and manage many cPanel accounts on a VPS or reseller server.

Why it matters: It is the industry standard: any developer knows how to use it.

Shared hosting

Several sites share a powerful server, each with resources isolated by CloudLinux.

Why it matters: The most affordable option for corporate sites, blogs and small to medium stores.

VPS (virtual private server)

A virtual server with CPU, RAM and disk reserved for you, with root access to install any software.

Why it matters: For high-traffic sites, custom systems or agencies hosting their own clients.

Managed vs. unmanaged

On an unmanaged server you install, update and secure the system. On a managed one we do it and monitor 24/7.

Why it matters: Without a sysadmin on your team, managed service usually costs less than one incident.

Snapshot

A full image of a VPS disk at a point in time, to roll back to if something goes wrong.

Why it matters: Take one before upgrading the operating system or installing new software.

Backup server

Independent storage in another data centre holding encrypted, incremental copies of your servers.

Why it matters: Follows the 3-2-1 rule: three copies, two media, one off-site.
